Recently, the United States has reached an agreement with 21 other countries to adopt a more stringent standard in the field of automobile door locks. U.S. officials have always been looking forward to having a unified new standard of car safety implemented globally. The implementation of this new standard for door locks may be the first step they hope.
This new standard is planned to be signed recently in Geneva. It was part of an agreement reached at the United Nations in 1998 that aims to establish a globally harmonized standard, rather than individual countries.
China, Japan, and EU member states all plan to sign this agreement.
According to this agreement, all signatory states must take all measures to implement the standards. Once the standard is adopted, the signatory states will require that all vehicles sold be manufactured strictly in accordance with this standard. For many countries, the new standard for door locks is the first update since the 1970s. The new standard requires that the doors of all cars must pass tests to ensure that the doors do not open due to impact during a collision.
U.S. officials said most of the doors will meet this standard, but the sliding doors on minivans and some vans need to make some changes. To meet this new standard, automakers may install a lock on the sliding door so that the cost of each door will increase by approximately $7.
After the agreement is signed, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will allow automakers and other parties to evaluate the agreement and make comments, and hopes to implement it in 2008.
