China took the lead to formulate a global technical regulations on safety of electric vehicles.

At the 174th meeting of the United Nations World Vehicle Coordination Forum (WP29) held on March 13-16, 2018, the Global Technical Regulations for Electric Vehicle Safety (EVS-GTR), led by China, the United States, the European Union, and Japan, was published in 1998. The parties to the "Annual Agreement" voted and passed the unanimous vote.

The EVS-GTR puts forward technical requirements around the safety performance of the vehicle and the power battery, and also stipulates the test methods for the electric vehicle to meet the safety performance requirements, so as to ensure the electric vehicle in various use environments and the occurrence of frontal collisions, side collisions and other accidents. At this time, occupant safety can be maximally protected. The establishment of EVS-GTR has been initiated since 2012. China, the United States, the European Union, and Japan have jointly led the establishment of a special working group for the drafting of laws and regulations, cooperating with nearly 50 countries and regions in the world to carry out a large number of technical researches, experimental verifications, and communication and coordination work. . China organized domestic experts from the China Steam Weaving Research Center, FAW, Beiqi, BYD, Ningde, and CLP 18 to lead the work of three of the research groups. EVS-GTR is the first safety technical regulation for electric vehicles in the global automotive technology regulatory system. It is also the first country in the work of the United Nations World Vehicle Regulatory Forum (WP29). Participation in the formulation of global technical regulations indicates that China has begun to change from the "follower" to the "leader" of the automobile standards and regulations, and the leading power and discourse power in the work of international standards and regulations has been continuously improved. In the future, China will continue to deeply participate in the formulation of laws and regulations such as new energy vehicles and intelligent grid-linked vehicles. It will play a more active role in promoting China's standards to the world and lead the automotive industry in innovation and development with standard regulations.
