From industrial policy to operator support, LoRa technology goes against the trend and dances with NB-IoT

Recently, LoRa technology, a new technology for low-power wide-area network (LPWAN), has ushered in a lot of good news. It has changed its past style and low-key style, and its development momentum is strong.

On July 31, LoRa Alliance and Tencent jointly announced that Tencent has joined the LoRa Alliance at the highest level;

On August 17, China Railway Tower Co., Ltd. signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Alibaba. The agreement pointed out that the China Tower will provide Alibaba's IoT construction with support for site resources throughout the country, and LoRa technology is more in line with the requirements;

On September 1, Unicom Internet of Things, ZTE Carat and Semtech jointly announced that Unicom's “LoRa Connection Management Platform” product was officially released and signed a strategic cooperation agreement.

With the support of Tencent, China Tower, Alibaba and China Unicom, the development of LoRa technology is highly anticipated. At the same time, its competitive relationship with another popular technology NB-IoT is also attracting attention.

Why does China Unicom support LoRa technology?

As we all know, the three major operators in China are interested in NB-IoT technology, and the investment is huge. Among them, Unicom recently launched a bid of up to 3 million NB-IoT modules, setting a record in the industry. This can not help but make people curious, since it has invested heavily in NB-IoT, why should we support the development of LoRa technology?

According to the collection micro-network, although the development of NB-IoT technology is very strong in recent years, it still has a lot of limitations in terms of cost. The NB-IoT module last year's telecom collection price is 66 yuan, this year Unicom's price limit to 35 yuan, the short-term further low-cost space is limited. The high price will undoubtedly cause enterprises to worry about deploying NB-IoT, which also makes the NB-IoT market not develop rapidly.

In contrast, LoRa's entire industrial chain has a cost advantage, which is conducive to the low-cost and flexible deployment of government and enterprise customers in the early stage. This is also an important reason for China Unicom to enter the LoRa market, using its IoT platform advantages and channel resources to explore new business opportunities with partners.

Liu Jianye, general manager of ZTE Carat, said that China Unicom entered LoRa and there is no fundamental problem in technology.

In fact, in March of this year, China Unicom announced the deployment of a LoRa-based IoT platform with Alibaba Cloud in Zhejiang. On September 1, Unicom once again added LoRa and jointly announced the LoRa connection management platform with ZTE Carat and Semtech. It can be seen that it has strong support for LoRa technology.

LoRa and NB-IoT technology dance

As a new technology for low-power wide area network (LPWAN), the characteristics of Internet of Things technologies such as eMTC, LoRa, sigfox and NB-IoT have their own advantages and have their own supporters. Among them, NB-IoT and LoRa are the two most popular technologies and the most competitive.

Due to the popularity of national policies, telecom operators and industry players, the development of NB-IoT technology is in full swing. In contrast, LoRa technology was once extremely dangerous because of the technical requirements for micro-power short-range radio transmission equipment (draft for comment) issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology at the end of last year.

However, it is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has fully absorbed the opinions of the industry, which has brought positive development to LoRa technology. According to Liu Jianye, general manager of ZTE Carat, the official plan is expected to be introduced at the end of the year and will not limit the development of LoRa.

Liu Jianye believes that LoRa technology and NB-IoT technology will also squash the living space of other Internet of Things technologies. In most segments of the pan-tech and Internet industries, there will be such a scenario: the market leader and the second child will compete fiercely, and then grow up together, and the third-year-old will usually suffer from the shackles. When LoRa is able to squeeze away other technologies and share the market with NB-IoT, it will have the opportunity to cut a large share of the cake.

From the current stage, the NB-IoT technology that emphasizes unified standards and ultra-high reliability is complementary to the LoRa technology that pursues personalized layout and meets the needs of the scene. Some people in the industry believe that these two technologies are not absolutely good or bad, each has its own advantages and disadvantages, but only meets different needs at different stages.
