According to reports, due to rising costs and increased competition and other reasons, Schaeffler will gradually terminate the production of wheel bearings in a German factory, and plans to reduce 576 employees.
Schaeffler spokesperson Marcus Brans said in a telephone interview recently that the company will gradually stop the production of spare parts for the Schweinfurt plant in Germany in the next two to three years. This decision was made when the company failed to win Made after the new parts order.
In the first quarter of 2013, Schaeffler's operating income fell by 3.6% year-on-year to 2.8 billion euros, while net debt increased to 6.8 billion euros. In order to ease the debt burden, Schaeffler hopes to maintain profitability through various filings.
Marcus Brans said that Schaeffler will retain 300 jobs in the Schweinfurt factory and will also provide an early retirement plan. The company has already started negotiations with the union. Schaeffler has approximately 29,000 employees in Germany, which accounts for 38% of its global workforce.
