The 3D printer will enter the space station

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center confirmed with a pilot project called "3-D Printing in Zero-G" that the 3D printer works fine under microgravity conditions. The project funded space manufacturing companies to build the first microgravity 3D printer and plans to ship it to the International Space Station during the SpaceX-4 replenishment mission.

This 3D printer manufactures three-dimensional objects by extruding heated plastic. In order to achieve the goal of "machining shop" at the space station, testing the machine at the space station is the first step. This technology can reduce space station operating costs and risks and also play an important role for space exploration personnel.

If the printer works well, the data and experience gained in this test will also help NASA and space-manufacturing companies achieve further space manufacturing efforts in other missions such as exploring asteroids and Mars in the future.
